Faced and Unfaced Insulation

At present, there are many thermal insulation materials. Such like fiberglass wool, rockwool, etc. But they all have the vapor problem. It will cause the mildew problem of the insulation materials. So it need the facing.

What is the difference between faced and unfaced insulation

Unfaced means there is no any jacket on the surface of the insulation materials. It is always used for interior wall which don’t face the outside, like floors, dining rooms, living rooms.
Faced insulation have foil facing on the surface of the insulation materials. The facing can protect the insulation materials to against the vapor. The faced insulation should be installed in exterior basement walls, attic ceilings, exterior walls. When you’re installing, remember that the facing side should toward the inside of the room.

What are the facings for the insulation

The kraft faced insulation is only a kraft paper.

FSK(foil scrim kraft) facing is a reflective insulation foil.It have 3 layers:aluminum foil, kraft and fiber scrim in the between. It is not only a vapor barrier but also radiant barrier.

PSK facing have the same structure of the FSK facing. But it use a white PP film instead of aluminum foil.It looks beautiful when installed under the roof of the metal building.

Which way to face insulation?

Condensation usually occurs on the surface of an object that alternates between hot and cold. There is a temperature difference between the inside and outside of the house in winter. The attic insulation or the wall insulation material is in the middle of the indoor and outdoor, water vapor is easy to condense on the surface of the insulation material. Therefore, we need insulation facings to isolate water vapor. The insulation foil should face indoors to protect the insulation material from rot and mold.
